About Bhagavathi Sevai
Bhagavathi sevai is a pooja that is done in the month of aadi by Keralites. This can be done on any day in aadi month but star on the day should match with the birth star of any of the family members.

Significance of Bhagavathi Sevai
This pooja is primarily performed to please goddess amman and to get rid of dristi if any, for all members of the family.

Pooja Vidhi
The pooja starts with 2 kolams which are called padmams and these will be colourful. Usually these are drawn by the vadiyar. One is for goddess amman and it is called Astadala Padmam (Flower with 8 petals). The second one is for Lord Ganesha and this is called Swasthik Padmam.

There are special velakku’s used for this pooja and these are called palakkadu velakku. The significance of using this velakku is it can hold oil in large quantities. There will be 2 velakku’s one is small and this is for lord Ganesha, the other is for amman. A stick is tied to the neck of the big valakku and it is dressed with garland and a blouse bit usually of maroon or red colour.

Actual pooja starts with Kalasa pooja where in fresh water is taken in pancha patram and shuddhi is done for all the pooja related stuff like flowers used for pooja, velakku, vadiyar etc. The Shuddhi continues with Sankha pooja where in water from Shankam(Conch) is used to purify everything used for pooja. Next Pillayar pooja is performed. As all of us know lord Ganesha is the first god and before we start any pooja we perform pillayar pooja to ensure that the rest of the pooja is done without any obstacles.
Panchamrutham
Then Ambal  avahanam(8 ambals will be invited and they will be placed in the 8 leaves of the astadala padmam) and Pranaprathishtai are done to the big velakku post which shodasa upachara pooja is done. Then Aravanai payasam or kadi payasam is offered to ambal to please her and a namaskaram is done. Belief is that Ambal feels very happy after having this sweet and she will be ready to bless us with whatever we wish. Then Lalitha sahasranamam, Lalitha Trishathi,Lalitha astotharam/Lakshmi astotharam are chanted and songs related to amman are sung post which punarpoojai is done with a minimum of 54 namaskarams.

  • Pacchai arisi(Raw rice) – 1 Cup
  • Powdered Jaggery – 4 Cups.

Procedure:
Take 1 tumbler of rice along with 2 tumblers of water and cook it into rice. Keep it separately and when It is hot mash it with a karandi.

Mix the Powdered jaggery with ¼ cup of water and place it on stove till it gets to paahu padham(Take this mixture and pour It in a cup of water once the heat gets reduced try to hold this mixture between your thumb and index finger. Try to move your index finger and thumb a string should get formed). Once the padham comes mix the mashed rice with it and start stirring in medium flame .Ensure that you keep stirring this continuously so that it doesn’t stick to the vessel. This process should continue till you reach a stage where this doesn’t stick to the Stirring karandi and the consistency should be Pongal consistency. If you continue this for long time then this becomes stiff. Once this is ready Scrap coconut into small pieces and fry this mixture in hot ghee till it is red.
